*********NOMINATED FOR 9 OSCARS*********
I remember thinking to myself, whilst watching The Grand Budapest Hotel, “I wander if this movie, will get buried and lost by the time for the Oscars come around…?” With a US release date of March 28th 2014, I was concerned that it would go unnoticed, nearly 9 months later! But, I was proven wrong, because as the sub-title says, The Grand Budapest Hotel has been nominated for nine academy awards, including Best Picture. This fact makes me smile, because put simply, this film is brilliant!
Wes Anderson, the director for this film, has an amazing vision, he is truly a cinematic genius. And its no wander that such a stellar cast want to work with him, it turns out that the cast includes 4 Oscar winners, plus another 11 actors/actresses with at least 1 Oscar nomination. That makes for a very solid team to be working with!
People in general love this movie, the sales figures are evidence to that, making The Grand Budapest Hotel, Wes Anderson’s highest grossing film, over $163 Million world-wide. It was also the highest grossing independent film for 2014. It’s going to be re-screening in selected theatres, if it isn’t already, so if you didn’t get a chance to see it at the cinemas, you may still have a chance, and might I add, it’s completely worth it!
This is a visual film, and every frame is a delight to behold. It is story-telling at its best! The costumes, the score and the cinematography all work perfectly in sync. I must admit, that whilst watching this film, I had a smile on my face the entire time, and I will be very surprised/angry if The Grand Budapest Hotel does not win at least 1 Oscar!
What I love about this film the most is the clear attention to detail, nothing is put into a scene, just for the sake of it being there, everything is relevant, for example, unlike most films, whenever there is a newspaper article shown in this film, it contains a detailed and complete depiction of the events on the headline. Thats art. Thats also written material, that most people may never read, except if you are an avid fan! Here is an example:
Wes Anderson deserves an Oscar, if he doesn’t get one to his name this year, he will most surely receive this form of recognition, some time in the future, no doubt! If you are keen on some delicate, but extra delicious gourmet treatment, then munch on The Grand Budapest Hotel, and you’ll be keen as ever for seconds!
TRIVIA COOKIE: Martin Scorsese is a big fan of Wes Anderson’s movies, and he has even chosen him as ‘the next Martin Scorsese’ in an Esquire magazine article. Very comical, if you ask me…!
