This movie has Tim Burton written all over it! It’s a whacky genre, mixed between horror, musical and dark comedy. I’m not generally keen on musicals but throw in Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, Alan Rickman and Sacha Baron Cohen in the mix and it makes it very hard to not have fun with this film.
You’ll find yourself thinking, is there anything that Johnny Depp can’t do? Depp’s performance as Benjamin Barker, takes you back to other classic Burton films like Edward Scissorhands and Beetlejuice. Mainly for its originality, costumes and imagination. With Burton’s amazing formula and Depp’s inability to make a bad movie, Its no wonder he took home the Golden Globe for best actor, in picture musical or comedy.
This film is very engaging, in a way that lets you step into the shoes of each character. Especially the infamous, Sweeney Todd, fabricated by Benjamin Barker. A man who had everything taken away from him, then only to be exiled for a crime he did not commit. Some people might let this experience crush them into oblivion. Not Barker though, he’s back and he wants revenge! It’s at this point as a viewer, that you almost have to make a decision as to who’s side you’re on. The law or Barker. I chose Barker.
For Depp this would be his first time singing publicly and to be honest, he’s brilliant. Musically the movie is flawless. Helena Bonham Carter had prior experience, where as Johnny Depp trained night and day to prepare for his role. Depp may not be the next American Idol but he gives the audience something else, an almost haunting expression and tone that shivers down your spine. Amongst his murder-like huskiness, lies a sad and depressed man. This is what holds you captive, while you listen and get roped in by his first cinematic musical performance.
It’s definitely a high energy film that comes across as dark but made colourful by how beautiful each character is in their own right. The Broadway musical adaption was definitely reinvented here. It should be noted that this film isn’t for the faint hearted. I say watch it and hold on tight for the ride that this amazing cast & crew gives you. “How ’bout a shave”!
TRIVIA COOKIE: Hundreds of other big name actors like Jack Nicholson, Al Pacino and Michael Douglas, were amongst those considered for the role of Sweeney Todd.
REMUNCH: Who is of the opinion that Johnny Depp deserves an Oscar? He has played numerous legendary roles, like Sweeney Todd, so when will this happen? His third and last nomination was for his performance as Sweeney in 2007, losing only to the insane triple Oscar winning male, in the acting category, Daniel Day-Lewis for There Will Be Blood, steep competition indeed! So when? Two words, Black Mass. FilmMunch gets the sense that Johnny Depp may very well be in line for an Oscar with his portrayal of Whitey Bulger. Too early to call? What do you think?
