FilmMunch is proud to present you with a film that may intrigue, and may get your emotions stirred! Firstly, if you don’t know anything about this film, then that’s fantastic, because the less you know about this film the better. Having said that, please keep reading haha! I was pleasantly surprised, but there is a lot more at stake here.

David and Nathan Zellner are responsible for this film, and it’s clear that these brothers are in store for great things if they continue in the industry. Take the Coen Brother’s as an example. they are more than often writers of their films as well as directors, and even sometimes they take on the task of editing. David Zellner does one more thing, he also acts in his films, and from what we see in Kumiko, The Treasure Hunter, David Zellner, can act.

While were on the subject of the Coen Brothers, one of their films that stands out is Fargo. The TV series Fargo was rather entertaining too. Incredibly, this film finds it’s roots and connections closely to said film. Kumiko is played by Rumiko Kikuchi who delivers such a convincing performance, so powerful, that it brought me to tears. Her character is truly intriguing and complex, and it’s her ‘treasure hunt’ that we follow. What is she looking for!? What lengths does she go to, in her quest!? And perhaps more importantly, who does she meet along the way!? What is her fate!?

There is beauty in this film, the look of it, the feel of it, the sound of it, it breathes mystery. Don’t you love a film that can make you laugh and cry at the same time? There is a feeling of both extremities here, the call for inspiration and the lament for disaster. Kumiko, The Treasure Hunter is a exploration of our mind’s fantasies and their ability to drive us. But how far can they drive us, and how much are we capable of, to get these fantasies turned into reality? As such, this film is more a psychological satire than a drama. It’s basically funny, until it’s not…

You are left feeling empty at the end of this film, and perhaps because I desire for emotional depth, I rather enjoyed this film, although it does get bleak. Some people want to be entertained by films, although interesting, this film is daring and perhaps not an easy flick for when you just want to unwind. Admittedly Kumiko cast a cloud over my day, and left me wandering. I then did some research, and I learnt some more about this one of a kind story, but more on that in my next post…kumiko still

Kumiko, The Treasure Hunter is wonderfully photographed and presents a wild tale about drive, worthy of, cuisine status here at FilmMunch!

TRIVIA COOKIE: This film drew inspiration from a ShortFilm entitled, This is a True Story, which we will be reviewing in our next post. Urban legends tend to develop into ‘true stories’, just some food for thought…
