Sometimes people say that a film is so bad, that it’s actually good. The 1995 short story adaption of Johnny Mnemonic is an example of this paradox. This would be the final movie directed by Robert Longo, who said about filmmaking, “making a painting is one thing, but making a film kicks your ass.” Filmmaking is an arduous task, watching Johnny Mnemonic might be just that for some, but for me it was a unique pleasure.

Keanu Reeves is Johnny, but he might as well be called Neo! I can’t believe that this film was made only 4 years before The Matrix! When you compare the two, they are so amazingly different, expect for Keanu Reeves, of course. I guess what shocked me the most was the visual elements of the film. I honestly thought that I was watching a film from the 80’s. Admittedly, I was impressed with the visuals, very cartoony and very deliberate 3D effects, but that’s when I still believed I was back in the 80’s!

Is there a film where Keanu Reeves doesn’t wear a black suit, white shirt, and black tie? Constantine, Johnny Mnemonic, The Matrix, and John Wick, recycled outfits? It makes me laugh, and I love to joke about it, but don’t get me wrong, Keanu is a great actor, and in his role as Johnny, he really does the best he can with the script he’s given.

Nothing much in terms of story here, but if Johnny Mnemonic is a prediction of 2021, then I’m done! I am pretty certain that by 2021 we will not be moving data from A to B via Keanu Reeve’s Brain, plus who speaks in terms of gigabytes anymore?

A light film munch at best, but worth seeing simply because Keanu Reeves in it, and Dolph Lundgren also. You might get a laugh or two out of it, and you might even tell people to watch it just because its so bad!

TRIVIA COOKIE: Originally Johnny Mnemonic was going to be a very small budget film, only about 1 and a half million, but due to the relevance of the Internet, and its growth during the 90’s, it was given a 30 million dollar budget. I can’t imagine what it would have looked like on such a tiny budget! Could have been better perhaps? Opinions?
