I love the iMDB plot line for this film, “the cross-country adventures of two good-hearted but incredibly stupid friends”! And it is an understatement to say that Lloyd Christmas (Jim Carrey) and Harry Dunnie (Jeff Daniels) are ‘incredibly stupid’!
It’s all in the title, this film is dumb and it gets dumber. But it does have heart, immediately these stupid characters are some how likeable, and whats more, their friendship is believable. This is what makes Dumb and Dumber a 90’s classic. Personally, it’s not a film that I would watch over and over, it’s more a film that I get around to watching every 10 years or so, or if there is a sequel, or a reboot, and one desperately needs a refresher.
I first watched this as a kid, perhaps not a good idea, since the film is very much an adult film! I don’t exactly remember how I got my hands on a copy of the VHS, back then, but the scene that always stayed with me, was the ‘tongue and frost’ scene. It wasn’t funny to me, it was just painful, and the image stuck, re-watching it, nearly 20 years later, it’s still not funny, but equally as painful.
What I love about 90’s comedies is that they are so cheesy, and the villains are just so iconic, very stereotypical, but amusing. The scene where the ‘bad guy’ get’s dosed with a lot of chilli sauce, by the dumb duo is probably the funniest for me. The fact that these two think it’s all a prank and good fun, just amplifies their out right stupidity. The Ferrelly brothers really did create some hilarious characters. The energy given into there roles by Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels is amazing, and I don’t know if there are any other actors that could suit these characters better. It’s refreshing to see Jim Carrey in his hey day, with so much enthusiasm.
Story goes that Jim Carrey added a lot of his own material into the film, adding lines like, “want to hear the most annoying sound in the world?” and “no way…that’s great. We’ve landed on the moon!” I think it’s genius to be under the pressure of acting a scene, and at the same time have mental wit, and ad-lib relatively funny jokes. That’s why Jim Carrey at the time was able to negotiate his salary from $700,000 to $7Million, which was almost half of the entire budget. Which was also the highest paying sum for a comedian.
In addition Jim Carrey became the first actor to star in three films, in the same year, that went straight to number one spot at the box office. The Mask, Ace Venture: Pet Detective and Dumb and Dumber. I am not sure who else has replicated this, but I am certain there aren’t many examples.
FilmMunchers, it’s great to take a trip down memory lane sometimes, with these silly, cheesy films, Dumb and Dumber is dumb, but steadily entertaining.
TRIVIA COOKIE: While filming, Jim Carrey asked to stay at The infamous Stanley hotel, and asked for the even more infamous room 237, made notorious by The Shining. He stayed in the room for 3 hours, and till this day refuses to speak about what happened in the room. Rumours have it that he saw a ghost of his grand dad. Creepy!
