*****NOMINATED FOR 5 OSCARS, WON 1*****
MINI REVIEW: Spike Jonze’s Her is a profound exploration about love and our expectations of love. It is also a satirical look at the way we interact with technology and the ongoing influences that technology has on us. The premise is simple, Theodore (Joaquin Phoenix) develops a relationship with an OS named Samantha, voiced by Scarlett Johansson.
This film doesn’t play like a comedy, but it sure is laughable, and it’s humour is presented in a very dry way. To be applauded is the writing and the creativity of this film, Spike Jonze took home an Oscar for his very first sole screenwriting credit. I don’t know about you, but I can not wait for what’s next from Spike Jonze. Not only is the writing spot on, but the directional elements that make this film so watchable really stand out, as much as the various shades of red-ish, orangey tones it uses.
Joaquin Phoenix visually carries this film along it’s almost nonsensical 126 minute runtime, but Scarlett Johansson carries this film even more so, audibly, with her subtle voice performance. You are put in Theodore’s perspective and forced to imagine the ‘body’ of who is speaking, the facial expressions, the nature of Samantha, and I think that is different for everybody. The idea of Artificial Intelligence is not new, but Spike Jonze’s presentation of it is fresh, and is so relevant that it could hardly be referred to as sic-fi. Technology is constantly evolving, how much are we evolving as individuals, how much are we bettering ourselves?
Here are 7 significant quotes from Her, enjoy!
1 Theodore: “It’s good to be with somebody that’s excited about life.”
2 Catherine: “You always wanted to have a wife without the challenges of actually dealing with anything real and I’m glad that you found someone. It’s perfect.”
3 Amy: “I think anybody who falls in love is a freak. It’s a crazy thing to do. It’s kind of like a form of socially acceptable insanity.”
4 Samantha: “641.”
5 Samantha: “You know, I actually used to be so worried about not having a body, but now I truly love it. I’m growing in a way that I couldn’t if I had a physical form. I mean, I’m not limited – I can be anywhere and everywhere simultaneously. I’m not tethered to time and space in the way that I would be if I was stuck inside a body that’s inevitably going to die.”
6 Theodore: “Sometimes I think I have felt everything I’m ever gonna feel. And from here on out, I’m not gonna feel anything new. Just lesser versions of what I’ve already felt.”
7 Theodore: “I just wanted you to know there will be a piece of you in me always, and I’m grateful for that. Whatever someone you become, and wherever you are in the world, I’m sending you love. You’re my friend to the end.”
