MINI REVIEW: So if you’re not that keen on horror films, but still want to get into the spirit of things with Halloween and what not, The Final Girls is a great addition to the sub-genre of horror comedy. It’s borderline classic!
The first thing to stand out in this film, is the clarity with which it is shot. Todd Strauss-Schulson, long time TV director is back on the big screen with his take on the slasher film, and there is clear evidence that this film was given a lot of meticulous love and attention. This is what he has to say about how he plans a film: “Before I start any project I write it all out in a big book. I go to a hotel and dream up the movie, how to get the story, or emotion out in a visual way — ideas of how to shoot a scene, how to build a sequence, macro stuff to micro — the colors, the composition, the movement of the shots. Those books basically become the edit of the movie.” I am eager to see this director continue in his increasingly great career! Aren’t you?
Taissa Farmiga who is barely nineteen is going to have an amazing career, already she has shown so much talent, and as the lead in this film, she gives her character a lot of depth, with talented subtle acting techniques. Along side her is Malin Akerman, who surprisingly connects perfectly with Taissa as they give the film heart in there unique portrayal of mother and daughter. The relationship they share in the film reminded me of Marty McFly and George McFly in Back To The Future. Accidentally, or maybe intentionally, if Todd Stauss-Schulson could comfirm for us, The Final Girls is a time travel film. This time, daughter, not son, ‘travels’ back in time to meet an adolescent version of her mother, not father. Is The Final Girls a time travel film? Any thoughts?
Apart from the great comedy, suspenseful story, and great musical score, this film is also a cinematographic delight, and as such we’d like to share with you, 7 horrifying, but stunning frames from The Final Girls, enjoy!
